What Decky is
The Mac sees a monitor.
A tablet, a phone or another Mac becomes a display macOS genuinely has. More than one of them can be doing it at the same time. Windows live on them the way they live on any other screen, and what those devices can do then travels the other way.
A monitor macOS actually has
It appears in System Settings beside the screens you already have, it takes a place in the arrangement, and Spaces work on it. The cable carries one of them and the rest arrive over WiFi, each a screen of its own at its own size and its own way up. Leave a window there and it is still there when the device comes back. You work on it.
A picture you hand out
A Room changes nothing about your display setup. One screen goes out to every tablet, phone and laptop at once. Viewers watch, and drive it only if you let them. You present with it.
Back into the Mac
The device hands its own hardware over, and the Mac treats it as its own.

It comes back the way you left it
Every display keeps a stable identity, so a tablet that reconnects is the screen macOS already knows and your windows are still on it. Arrangements are remembered per desk, and settings belong to the device. Otherwise the first thing you do each morning is lay the desk out again.
Install the app, then plug in or go wireless
Decky Display comes from Google Play and runs on an Android tablet or a phone. One device connects over the cable, the rest join over WiFi, and both at once is the ordinary case: the cable for the screen you work at, WiFi for the ones around it. A cable needs no network at all and charges the device while it works. WiFi needs no cable and puts the device anywhere in the room.
The Mac itself, from the tablet
Mission Control, Spotlight, the Apple menu, the media keys and the switch between Extend, Mirror and Alone, from a panel on the device. Sending the keystroke is not enough for most of them. A system shortcut fires only while something is still bound to it, and the window server checks that a modifier was genuinely held, so Decky asks the Dock for Mission Control directly instead. A remote that can only type cannot open anything.
Your keyboard stays your keyboard
Characters travel as characters, so the tablet keeps its own layout, dead keys, autocorrect and emoji. A ü arrives as a ü instead of whatever an American layout has on that key. Focus a field and the Mac finds the caret itself and lifts the picture clear of the on-screen keyboard.
To the app, the pen is a pen
Pressure, tilt, eraser and hover arrive through a virtual trackpad as genuine tablet events, which is what Photoshop and Procreate are already listening for. A click with a pressure number attached leaves the brush inferring weight from speed. That is what a stroke tapering in the wrong place looks like.
No account, no server, nothing to sign in to
The Mac and the device talk over your cable or your own network. Nothing to register, no password to forget, and no service that can be down on the morning you need a screen. It works on a plane and on a locked-down office network, and there is nothing about it that can be switched off from somewhere else. Most of these want an account before they show you anything.
How to start
Three steps, and the third is the only one you repeat.
Connect
Plug in a cable, or let the tablet find your Mac on the network. Both carry everything, including the first pairing. A connected cable takes priority, and it charges the device while it works.
Pair once
Plugged in there is no code to read: the Mac asks, and you press Pair. Over WiFi it shows eight digits to type on the device. Either way it happens once, and from then on the device is known, trusted and remembered across restarts.
Use as display
The device becomes a monitor macOS genuinely has, listed in System Settings with the rest. Then choose what it does: Extend for more desk, Mirror to copy a screen you already have, or Alone to make it the only one. The mode is named the same on both ends.
