Scaling and supersampling
More room, still sharp
Native gives you room and text too small to read. The Retina mode gives readable text and half the room. Decky opens up everything in between.
The modes macOS keeps to itself
macOS publishes fewer display modes than it has. Decky reads the full table, so the supersampled ones your monitor can actually do are on the list.
Rendered large, shown sharp
A supersampled mode draws more pixels than the panel has and scales them down. You get a bigger desktop without the softness that comes from asking for one the ordinary way.
Your real monitors too
This is not only for the screens Decky makes. Point it at the monitor already on your desk and the same ladder of sizes is there.
Pick the desktop, not the pixel count
Every option says how much room you get, which is what you were choosing between. The pixel arithmetic underneath is Decky's problem.
Size and sharpness are two questions
How much desktop you get and how sharply it is drawn are two questions, so Decky asks them separately. One long list would put two rows next to each other that read identically and do different things.
It tells you what it costs
A supersampled desktop is real work for the Mac. Decky says what it is drawing and what it is scaling that onto, so a choice that costs something looks like one.
